Nurse Jennifer Smith had just arrived for work at the Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rome, New York, when her phone rang. At the other end was John Burley, a patient desperate to find the whereabouts of his pet dog, Boomer.

As Burley lives a long way from his family, his dog had been sent to a shelter. The nurse tracked down the dog and when she had found out where he was she said she would like to adopt it.
In fact, the hospital has allowed Smith to take the dog to work – and to visit his original owner. "It helps John with the healing process and gives him peace of mind"; said the nurse.

Como Burley mora longe de seu círculo familiar, o seu cachorro acabou sendo conduzido para um abrigo de animais. A enfermeira tratou de rastrear o animal e, ao descobrir o local exato onde estava, manifestou interesse em adotá-lo.
Além disso, o hospital autorizou que Smith levasse o cachorro para o trabalho – e permitiu que fizesse visitas ao seu dono original. "Isto ajuda John com o processo de cura e lhe dá paz de espírito", afirmou a enfermeira.
