On 2 June the Jewish Community and Oporto Diocese launched the film The Light of Judah. All receipts will revert to combat hunger which has increased as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The film shows the history of the Jews in the city of Oporto from the Middle Ages to the present day, highlighting iconic moments such as the peaceful coexistence between Jews and Christians which was torn by King D. Manuel’s Edict, the ambience of coexistence between New Christians and Old Christians that was destroyed in 1618 and the return of the Jews to this city in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
The project saw the light following a protocol of cooperation signed by Dom Manuel Linda, Bishop of Oporto, Dias Ben Zion, President of the Jewish Community of Oporto and Charles O. Kaufman, President of B’nai B’rith International.
In addition, the film is dedicated to Shimon Biton, a Sephardic Jew who died in the 2019 air crash in Ethiopia. Shimon was planning to obtain Portuguese nationality and to honour his wish and his tie to Portugal, his sister will continue the process on behalf of his five children.

Comunidade Judaica e Diocese do Porto lançam filme para combater a fome
No dia 2 de junho, a Comunidade Judaica e a Diocese do Porto lançaram o filme A Luz de Judá, cujas receitas serão integralmente revertidas para combater a fome aumentada pelo contexto da pandemia do coronavírus.
O filme apresenta a história dos judeus na cidade do Porto desde a Idade Média até os dias atuais e mostra pontos emblemáticos, como a convivência pacífica entre judeus e cristãos que foi rompida com o Édito de D. Manuel, o ambiente de coexistência entre cristãos-novos e cristãos-velhos que foi destruído em 1618 e o retorno dos judeus à cidade nos séculos XX e XXI.
O projeto é realizado a partir de um protocolo de colaboração assinado por Dom Manuel Linda, Bispo do Porto, Dias Ben Zion, presidente da Comunidade Judaica do Porto e Charles O. Kaufman, Presidente da B’nai B’rith Internacional.
O filme também é dedicado a Shimon Biton, um judeu sefardita vítima de um acidente aéreo na Etiópia em 2019. Shimon planejava obter a nacionalidade portuguesa e, para honrar a sua vontade e o seu vínculo com Portugal, sua irmã dará continuidade ao processo para os cinco filhos que ele deixou.
