The short film The Nun's Kaddish tells the moving story that took place in the city of Oporto in 1982: two nuns went in search of Rudolph Lemchen, a member of the Jewish Community of Oporto, to fulfil the wish of the German Jewish refugee, Emil Oppenheim, who wanted Kaddish (prayer for the dead) to be said when he died.
At the time, the Jewish Community of Oporto was very small and scattered all over the north of Portugal. So, it was impossible to bring together enough members for the prayer to be said in accordance with the Jewish religion. Lemchen prayed alone before Oppenheim’s grave and was surprised when one of the two nuns requested the prayer book and also said the prayer – demonstrating impressive spirituality, fraternity and respect between religions.
Thirty six years later the Jewish Community of Oporto was able finally to fulfil Oppenheim’s wish.
In 2018, Kaddish was said for Emil Oppenheim, with a packed synagogue, including many Sephardic Jews of Portuguese origin who had returned to Portugal after a long period when there were very few Jews in this country.
The film has already received over 50 awards in festivals, and is the Portuguese short film with the greatest number of awards at international festivals. It merited a letter of praise from Pope Francis, who talks of “the many people who were directly involved and represented to a greater or lesser extent in making this film – the abundance of divine gifts, to make them the leaven of fraternity, hope and joy in the heart of the world, wishing everyone every happiness with God’s blessing.”
Curta-metragem conta história verdadeira sobre bondade inter-religiosa
O curta-metragem The Nun's Kaddish (O Kaddish da Freira) eterniza uma comovente história ocorrida na cidade do Porto no ano de 1982: duas freiras procuraram por Rudolph Lemchen, um membro da Comunidade Judaica do Porto, para realizar o desejo do refugiado judeu alemão Emil Oppenheim de que fosse pronunciado o Kaddish (oração pelos mortos) quando morresse.
Na época, a Comunidade Judaica era muito pequena e estava dispersa pelo Norte do país, pelo que não foi possível juntar os dez membros necessários para que a reza fosse conduzida conforme a religião. Lemchen rezou sozinho diante da lápide de Oppenheim e foi surpreendido por uma das freiras, que pediu o livro de orações e também pronunciou a reza – protagonizando uma impressionante cena de espiritualidade, fraternidade e respeito entre as religiões.
Trinta e seis anos depois, a Comunidade Israelita do Porto / Comunidade Judaica do Porto pôde cumprir o desejo de Oppenheim.
Em 2018, foi realizado o Kaddish por Emil Oppenheim, com a sinagoga completamente cheia, com destaque para a presença de muitos judeus sefarditas de origem portuguesa que retornaram a Portugal após um longo período com escassa presença judaica no país.
A obra já recebeu mais de 50 prêmios em festivais gold, alcançando o título de curta-metragem português mais premiado em festivais internacionais, e mereceu uma elogiosa carta do Papa Francisco, invocando, "sobre quantos estiveram mais ou menos directamente envolvidos e representados na concretização do referido filme – a abundância dos favores divinos, para que se tornem fermento de fraternidade, esperança e alegria no coração do mundo, e a todos deseja as melhores felicidades com as bençãos de Deus.”
